Endo is short for endometriosis. Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory illness where tissue similar to that of the endometrium (uterine lining) grows outside of the uterus in places that it shouldn’t. Endo has been found in every single organ in the body. Endo’s most common symptom is excruciating period pain, but it comes with a whole slew of symptoms that affect people around the clock. Some (notice I said, some) of these symptoms include chronic pelvic pain, chronic back pain, IBS-like symptoms, nausea, vomiting, chronic fatigue, mood swings, anxiety, depression, constipation, bloating, pelvic floor dysfunction, and infertility. This devastating disease affects 1 in 10 women and takes, on average, 7-10 years to be formally diagnosed (which is unacceptable). Endometriosis has no cure.
Probably because women’s pain has been normalized, doubted and dismissed for….ever. Especially when it comes to our periods. Repeat after me: Painful periods are NOT normal. Despite what every doctor (save a select few who are wonderful), pop culture, and advice from your misguided but well intentioned Aunt has told you, no, your period should NOT be painful. A painful period is a signal that something is going on with your body, it is not a “normal part of being a woman” *cue my not even slightly veiled eye roll*. So, if this is all news to you, and you think you might have endo, it’s not your fault!
